We’ve had a baby!!!

Dear all,

It’s been a while since our last post, but that’s because up until now there hasn’t been much going on with us. But since the birth of baby William on 12th November I can safely say that there will never be another dull moment and our lives will never be the same again!

He was born at 9.43pm on 12th November and weighed 8lbs exactly. Here are the edited highlights of my child birth experience (rated PG, for the 18 certificate version you will need to call me!):

10pm, Sunday 11th November labour starts. Tens machine goes on. All seems bearable. Enjoy a few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (series 6) and a packet of jaffa cakes.

6am, Monday 12th November. Midwife comes round with gas and air. There is initially much rejoycing, until I realise that gas and air only “takes the edge off” the pain. I query whether midwife has set up the machine correctly. She tells me to try a few contractions without the gas and air to see the difference. I don’t.

12 noon, Monday 12th November. Very grumpy. Midwife offers pethadine. I’ve heard about this and get excited at the prospect. However, my prescription has mistakenly come in tablet form. It doesn’t work. Console myself with the thought that it can’t go on for much longer.

8pm Monday 12th November. 8 hours later and I am getting slightly delerious with the pain. But I notice the midwife warming the towels and see the end is in sight. Then it seems I’m not quite fully dilated. Another couple of hours should do it I’m told.

8.01pm Monday 12th November. I process this new information for a minute and then loose the plot. An ambulence is called to whisk me away to the maternity hospital.

9.43pm Monday 12th November. 3 midwifes, 2 nurses, 1 registrar, 1 medical student and 1 husband later and Baby Jones is extracted. Enjoy a mug of tea and some raspberry jam on toast and gaze in wonderment at the latest addition to the Jones family.

I can’t believe we’ve had William home for a week already. The time is flying by as we are all getting to know each other. William’s main interests are sleeping and eating. I don’t sleep as much as I used to, and my main interests are still gazing in wonderment at William, marvelling at the fact that he used to live in my tummy, and pondering whether I will eventually forget how painful child birth is so I can start work on a brother or sister for him!

Love Kate (mummy)
